SAALT Exchanges
In order to build the strength of local South Asian communities, each of us can become involved in a number of ways. We want to hear your ideas about how to empower your campus, place of worship or community with information, resources, and projects. On our site, you will find examples of community-building efforts initiated by SAALT and/or our partners in New Jersey; Washington, DC; Chicago; Bay Area, and Michigan.
In many cities around the United States, SAALT has initiated local dialogues called SAALT Exchanges. The SAALT Exchange is a half-day, town-hall style dialogue in cities with significantly large South Asian populations. The purpose of the SAALT Exchange is to bring local community members and organizations together, provide a space for discussing local needs and concerns and for SAALT to provide a national update on issues impacting the community. Through informative presentations and locally facilitated strategy sessions, the SAALT Exchange gives participants the opportunity to identify specific issues that affect the community locally and to be part of a process in creating solutions to these issues.

Between 2004 and 2008, we have held SAALT Exchanges in New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, SF/Bay area, Michigan, Northern Virginia, and Houston. Some of the common issues and trends arising from these SAALT Exchanges hae included: the need to have regular communication among different South Asian organizations and leaders in the local community; the need to work more toward broad issues of concern among local South Asian communities; the need for more civically and politically active community members; the need for a better understanding of generational and class differences; and the need for further community education about the needs of marginalized community members.
