Strengthening South Asian Communities in the United States

Lead the Change

Are you ready for Lead the Change?

This year, on the landmark occasion of its 10th anniversary, SAALT is introducing a new program to develop your leadership skills. The new initiative being launched on October 3rd, called Lead the Change, will provide you with the skills and resources they need to become effective community leaders creating social change.

What is Lead the Change?

SAALT is offering Lead the Change in conjunction with Be the Change for the first time this year in Washington, DC. Be the Change is an annual national day of service that will take place on October 2nd this year. Lead the Change will harness the energy of the volunteer day of action to help participants sustain their efforts within their communities over a longer period of time.

This additional programming will offer South Asian activists, advocates, and allies the opportunity to engage with leaders in their communities and participate in workshops to build skills in the arenas of corporate culture and grassroots organizing.

Lead the Change
is open to Be the Change volunteers as well as all community members.

What can I expect on October 3rd?

At Lead the Change, you will hear from community leaders during an opening plenary, and you will participate in sessions focused on enhancing your ability to navigate corporate culture and grassroots organizing skills. Check back soon to hear about confirmed speakers!

Opening Plenary: Leading a Movement - Your passion and drive for making a difference led you to participate in Be the Change 2010. Now that it’s over, how will you stay engaged beyond that day of service? How are you going to balance your professional life and your passion for service? This plenary session features South Asian leaders who have created change and given back to their communities through their professional lives. You will hear from a range of speakers from various backgrounds including non-profit board members, volunteers, and government employees. Speakers will include:
  • Razia Kosi, Board President of CHAI
  • Sadaf Padder, Student at George Washington University
  • Rashad Ullah, Board Member of KhushDC
Session I: Navigating Corporate Culture – Advancing in your career as a South Asian individual in the dominant-culture corporate environment, whether a law office or a Fortune 500 company, can be challenging and even, at times, disheartening. At this session, you will hear the perspectives of prominent South Asian corporate leaders and their experiences navigating corporate culture in the U.S. The round table discussion will focus on the skills you need to overcome barriers in the workplace, and you will receive advice and tips from people who have succeeded in their chosen professions.
