Join or Start a SAALT Circle Today!

Join or start a SAALT Circle in your community or campus today!

What is a SAALT Circle?

A SAALT Circle is a group of people (friends, community members, co-workers) who share SAALT’s mission – to empower South Asians, to better understand issues affecting us in America as immigrants and people of color, and to participate in civic and political engagement projects that build the strength of our community.

Why join or start a SAALT Circle?
  • Connect to individuals in your local area who have similar values
  • Learn about issues of importance to the South Asian community
  • Work on local civic and political engagement projects to help the community
  • Learn organizing, leadership, facilitation and public speaking skills
Who can start or join a SAALT Circle?

We encourage anyone to begin or join a SAALT Circle, but suggest that SAALT Circle participants become dues-paying members of SAALT to support the work of the organization around the country. You can invite friends, family, and/or other local community members. A SAALT Circle needs at least 3 members to start up.

What can SAALT Circles Do?
  • Meet regularly to share ideas, resources, and discuss community news related to issues affecting South Asians in America
  • Participate in local civic and political engagement projects throughout the year (see below for details)
  • Empower yourself and the local South Asian community
  • Be part of a national social justice movement
Where do SAALT Circles meet?
Anywhere – a participant’s home, a coffee shop, an organization’s conference room, a community center, or a restaurant. We can help you identify potential locations in your area.

If you are interested in joining a local SAALT Circle or need help in starting one in your area, contact SAALT at info@saalt.org with the subject headline “SAALT Circle” or call the SAALT Office at (301) 270-1855.

What SAALT Circles Can Do.

Below are some ideas that we've come up with, and we hope to hear from you about how SAALT Circles can work to create change in local communities!

  1. Voter Education: SAALT Circle members can reach out to local places of worship or community centers with non-partisan voter education materials such as voter guides, sample ballots and county specific voter information.
  2. Local Community and Campus Forums/Panels: SAALT Circle members can plan a local community forum or panel with a focus on how to increase civic and political engagement. SAALT will assist by providing guidance, suggesting speakers, and providing talking points, materials and resources on this topic. Email us at info@saalt.org if Let us know if there is interest in your area for a civic education Town Hall.
  3. Be the Change, National Volunteer Day of Service: If SAALT Circle members are interested in community service activities, they can join SAALT’s annual Be the Change event. For more information, visit our Be the Change webpage.
  4. Community Documentation: South Asians reside in all parts of the United States. Document the community in your area through pictures and stories.
  5. Host screenings or discuss readings about issues affecting South Asians: Get your family, youth group, peers, and colleagues engaged! SAALT has information about books, articles, documentaries and more that can get you started.
