Maryland Outreach Coordinator (AmeriCorps Position)

SAALT’s Maryland Outreach Coordinator will work to improve access to naturalization resources for South Asians living in Maryland as part of the Maryland New Americans Partnership (MNAP).  MNAP is a statewide AmeriCorps program that coordinates the efforts of existing community-based organizations to more effectively assist Lawful Permanent Residents in the naturalization process to achieve U.S. citizenship.

Responsibilities will include: organizing citizenship/ naturalization events; conducting outreach at South Asian cultural and religious events; connecting immigrants with naturalization and other services; recruiting volunteers for SAALT’s Maryland work; educating local government agencies and policy- makers about the needs of South Asians; and strengthening partnerships with organizations that serve South Asians and immigrant communities in Maryland.

SAALT's internships allow students to help promote the civic and political engagement of South Asians in the United States. We encourage applications from undergraduate, graduate, and law students who are self-motivated and committed to working toward social change in your community.


Blog Intern (Ongoing)
  • Assist with maintaining and updating the SAALT Spot
  • Post short daily updates (Daily Buzz) on the SAALT Spot using available resources (Google Reader/alerts) with stories of interest for the South Asian community
  • Write longer pieces based on interest/need
  • Help moderate comments as necessary
Qualifications
  • Previous experiences with blogging and writing on the internet and an understanding of the blogosphere a plus
  • Experience with or willingness to learn WordPress blogging format
  • Interest in/passion for progressive causes
  • Ability to post regular Daily Buzz posts every morning

Program and Campaigns Intern
The Program and Campaigns Intern will promote the mission of SAALT’s community mobilization, partnerships, and policy work by:

  • Providing support for program development, including research and writing
  • Supporting program preparation involving conference calls, research, and planning for Town Hall forums across the country
  • Assisting in community outreach, recruitment of event co-sponsors, and advertising for community events across the country
Communications Intern
The Communications Intern will provide support for all of SAALT’s online, media, and other communications, including:
  • Assisting with communications, including website development, media outreach, press kits, and community outreach
  • Assisting with marketing through social networking sites, conference attendance, and other outreach opportunities
  • Providing research support on student, professional, and cultural conferences and other speaking opportunities
