History of Be the Change
SAALT is proud to say that 2011 is our 10th anniversary of coordinating Be the Change (BTC) around the country. In the past decades, nearly twenty thousand South Asian Americans and their allies have volunteered in their respective communities for a better future. From passing out workers rights to taxi drivers in New York City to working with a women's domestic shelter in Chicago, BTC has created and supported infrastructure to develop emerging leaders across the country as well as strengthening our community nationwide.
This would not be possible without the continued development of the program. Although SAALT currently coordinates Be the Change, its origins are not in Washington D.C., but rather Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Be the Change originated at the University of Michigan in 1997. SAALT has helped coordinate the event annually on a national level since 2000. Volunteers from universities and organizations contribute thousands of hours of community service each year.
