What is Be the Change (BTC)?

Be the Change is SAALT’s national day of service. On this day, South Asian Americans and their allies volunteer together all over the United States.

Where is Be the Change?
BTC happens in many college campuses and cities around the country. SAALT selects a few cities as “core cities” (with large populations of South Asians), “non-core cities” (smaller cities with small to medium South Asian populations), and “campuses” where college students organize their campus communities to volunteer.

When is Be the Change?
Traditionally, this one-day event falls around on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday in October.

What happens on a typical Be the Change event?
•    kick-off event with inspirational speaker or performer from your community
•    volunteering at different nonprofits/organizations in groups
•    collective reflection on service, community, and civic engagement

What type of volunteer work can I expect on this day?
It depends on what campus or city you will be volunteering with. Typically, we have had volunteers working on planting trees, working at domestic violence shelters, painting schools, read to youth, rebuild homes, cleaning parks and highways, voter registration, assisting blood drives, etc. For more information, you should contact your campus or city coordinators. You will be working on one activity during the day for usually 2 hours.

Who has gotten involved with Be the Change in the past?
All types of South Asian Americans. From college student organizations, greek life, professionals, nonprofits, corporations—everyone has gotten involve with BTC in multiple ways and felt welcomed!

Is this event just for Indians, or are all types of South Asian Americans represented?
All are represented according to local outreach. SAALT strongly recommends that local BTC Coordinators reach out to all types of South Asians (from Pakistanis to Sri Lankans to Tibetans to Kenyans to Trinidadians, etc). We also work hard to make sure all religious groups are represented including Muslims, Jains, Sikhs, Hindus, Christians etc.

Do I have to be South Asian to participate in Be the Change?
No, you do not have to be of South Asian background to participate with Be the Change. We encourage folks of all different backgrounds to be volunteers and Coordinators! Please read our blogpost about what it means to be an ally!

How much does Be the Change cost?
Absolutely nothing but your time and passion for your community.
